New Victoria Dam Bushwalk

Today was gonna be one of the longest bushwalks that this little mob had ever done before, all up just over 14 kilometers long. So we had to leave the two littlest ones behind with the old girl, so with Jacko and Sarah in tow we set of on the walk along the Kattamorda Trail.

It's a real ripper bush track that makes it real easy to walk along, the only bad point was that the temp was up to 32.... bugger!

Here we cross the Munday Brook over an old wooden bridge, this track was built in 1872 to run a horse-drawn wooden tramway to transport cut logs from the forest to the Canning river. From the Canning river the logs were transported in flat bedded boats to the Swan river, to ships anchored in Gage roads then shipped to England.

Then after a massive walk we had made it to the Dams... yes Dams their are two Dams here. They built the first Dam in 1891 but soon realised it was far to small, so it was taken out of service 99 years latter. But they left the old Dam and actually cut the thing straight down the middle, giving you a real beaut idea how the Dam was built and how it looked ... how cool hay!

And here is a photo of the middle of the old Dam wall, now this is just so coooool!

In the picnic area at the base of the New Dam they have some beaut shaded B.B.Q spots, so we had our picnic here. Strewth it was a hot day mate.

Now I thought the walk here was hard, until we had to walk up the road that takes you to the top of the New Victoria Dam. But we did make it and here are the two nevilles at the top.

The old fella was to stuffed to walk up to the viewing area, so I got Jacko to walk up their and Take some photos. Here's one of the Dam wall.

Now we had to walk all the way back to our car park, and we had to pass through the old Dam. To give you a difference of the two Dams the old one had a storage volume of 0.6 Million cubic metres, where as the New one had a storage volume of 9.5 Million cubic metres... crickly! This photo gives you a better idea how they cut away a part of the Dam wall, it doesn't matter how many times I looked at it I still think it's really cool.

On the way back we bumped into some of the locals.

Here is Jacko and Sarah with two of there mates in the back ground.

Almost at the end of a long hard bushwalk, the sun was hitting 34 in the shade and the kiddies were getting shitty with me.... Oh well what are dad's for hay!
